Lend Me a Tenor Synopsis

Lend Me a Tenor tickets will guarantee some serious laughs on Broadway this year. The Lend Me a Tenor synopsis is a tried and tested one. Employing the classic farcical formula of a horizontally cross-sectioned stage with views of different rooms and numerous entrances and exits through adjoining doors makes Lend Me a Tenor a fast-paced comedy that keeps coming at you. Set in 1934 in Cleveland, the Lend Me a Tenor plot shows the uproarious sequence of circumstances that befall famous tenor, Tito Merelli (known as “Il Stupendo”) on his visit to the city. First, Il Stupendo’s wife finds an adoring autograph-seeking fan in a closet in their hotel room – and mistakes her for a secret lover. The gala fundraiser the tenor is to perform in for the Cleveland Opera Company comes under threat right away, when Merelli’s wife flies off the handle and leaves him a farewell note that he reads and is beside himself. The parts in this mad farce are played superbly by “Into Thin Air star Anthony LaPaglia and “Monk” actor Tony Shalhoub. Lend Me a Tenor marks a Broadway first for Stanley Tucci as director and begins previews March 11 at the Music Box Theatre.

But back to the Lend Me a Tenor plot: After his hysterical outburst following his discovering the “Dear John” letter from his wife, Il Stupendo is given a dose of tranquilizer – or a double dose to be exact – which knocks him out completely right before he is due to go onstage. The Cleveland Opera’s GM, Saunders, is horrified, but like a true pro he knows the show must go on. The Opera Company need the money above all else, plus it would be a huge loss of face among other opera companies the world over. Saunders asks someone to impersonate Merelli and Max, his assistant, obliges. Merelli is there to perform Otello in a one-off show, and Max dons the black face makeup and enters the stage. Unfortunately, Merelli regains consciousness and also decides to take the stage…triggering a crazy series that ranks among the very top farces of all time! It’s one of those plays that you can literally go to see time and time again. Things happen so fast it’s easy to miss most of them, but you won’t stop laughing.
